Earth Day: Our Power, Our Planet
Today we celebrate Earth Day under the theme “Our Power, Our Planet”, a reminder that every small action can make a difference.
Every year on April 22, the world pauses to reflect on something we often take for granted, the planet we call home. Known globally as Earth Day, this day has grown into one of the largest environmental movements in the world, uniting millions of people across countries, cultures, and communities.
Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970 in the United States, sparked by growing concerns about pollution, environmental degradation, and the visible impact of industrialisation. What began as a grassroots initiative quickly gained momentum, leading to the establishment of key environmental protections and inspiring similar movements worldwide.
Today, Earth Day is coordinated by the EarthDay.org and is observed in more than 190 countries. A powerful reminder that caring for the Earth is a shared responsibility.
The 2026 theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” places the spotlight firmly on collective responsibility. It speaks to the idea that real change does not only come from governments or global organisations, but from individuals, communities, and local initiatives.
At its core, Earth Day encourages environmental awareness and education; sustainable living practices; conservation of natural resources; action against pollution and climate change; and most important community-driven environmental projects.
It’s about recognising that small, consistent actions like reducing waste, saving water, planting trees, and supporting conservation, all add up to meaningful impact.
Here in the De Kaap Valley, we are surrounded by extraordinary natural beauty, from our mountains and rivers to the unique biodiversity that makes this region so special. Protecting these natural assets is not just an environmental issue. It is a community responsibility and an investment in our future.
Earth Day is a reminder that we don’t need to look far to make a difference. Whether it’s a school recycling project, a community clean-up, or simply choosing more sustainable habits at home, every action counts. I think you will all agree with me: Our town needs some clean-up action.
As we mark Earth Day today, we would love to hear from our readers. Did your school, organisation, club, or any department in the De Kaap Valley do anything to celebrate Earth Day this year? Is there an individual that made it his or her mission to set the ball rolling to celebrate Earth Day?
Share your photographs, stories, and initiatives with us at dekaapecho@gmail.com. Let’s celebrate the positive steps being taken in our community and inspire others to do the same.
When it comes to protecting our environment, the message is clear, every small step or deed to save our planet is worth the effort. After all our power truly lies in our planet.
